My Aunt’s heart surgery went bad. She’s in an induced coma and kept alive artificially. 24 hours ago doctors were talking about heart transplant , this morning they are suggesting an artificial heart. I read on the Internet that artificial hearts are given to patient who have less then 1 month to live. Why the doctors are not telling this to my uncle and cousins? It’s like they are kept in the dark. They think she is gonna come home with an artificial heart.

An artificial heart is a stop-gap measure to give the patient time until they can find a compatible heart to transplant. They do not do surgery on people who have less than one month to live. They probably said, if they don't do the surgery, she will probably have less than one month to live. They are trying to buy some time and get your aunt stronger so that she might be able to have a heart transplant. There are no guarantees on how this is going to come out because the risks are high and the outcomes often poor. I'm not sure she will be able to come home with the artificial heart although there has been a story about one man that lived 7 more months with an artificial heart and was able to go home. Never say never.
Why don't they talk to the cardiac surgeon? Are they hillbillies?
