They do not do surgery on people who have less than one month to live. They probably said, if they don't do the surgery, she will probably have less than one month to live. They are trying to buy some time and get your aunt stronger so that she might be able to have a heart transplant. There are no guarantees on how this is going to come out because the risks are high and the outcomes often poor. I'm not sure she will be able to come home with the artificial heart although there has been a story about one man that lived 7 more months with an artificial heart and was able to go home.
