heart rate is directly linked with respiration rate. during a period of intense activity, the heart rate speeds up to carry oxygen to the cells faster. the only way to get more oxygen is by increasing respiration.
another factor which helps control heart rate is adrenaline. when you get nervous or excited, the heart responds to this increase of adrenaline by beating faster, thus icreasing heart rate.
