Please dont say smoking or excercising because I already know that. Its just that my mom woke up this morning with her heart rate at about 170. Eventually it went down when I told her to eat something. Just curious thats all.

Has your mother had her blood pressure checked lately? High blood pressure can make your heart rate go up, as can stress. Go somewhere to get her blood pressure checked. Did she experience a head ache with her high heart rate? If so, could be her blood pressure.
She could have sleep apnea, which causes you to quit breathing during your sleep. This then causes your heart rate to go up because you body goes into panic mode because it is not getting enough oxygen.
Usually a terrible nightmare that you can't remember can cause it, especially if u dream of a fear u have or if someone is trying to kill you.
a panic attack can certainly cause this,it's happened to me many times, other reasons could be nervousness/tension,stress related, excitment, but if she woke up like that i would go with the onset of a panic attack perhaps? If it continues, perhaps your mum should get it checked out,it may even be hormone related.
