What To Expect After Surgery
After surgery, there will be a short stay (1 to 2 days if there are no complications) in the intensive care unit (ICU). In the ICU, you will likely have:
Continuous monitoring of your heart activity.
A tube to temporarily help with breathing.
A central line, which is a thin plastic tube inserted into a vein in the neck and threaded down into the heart and pulmonary artery. It is used to monitor pressures and blood flow within the heart.
A tube to remove stomach secretions until you start eating again.
A tube (catheter) to drain the bladder and measure urine output.
Tubes connected to veins in the arms (intravenous, or IV, lines) through which fluids, nutrition, and medicine can be given .http://www.webmd.com/heart-disease/coron…

There are many types of heart surgery and many different diseases that require heart surgery. The life expectancy after heart surgery is dependent on the underlying disease, whether it was completely reversed, the success of the operation, and also other medical problems. If the disease is reversible with surgery and the surgery is successful, then you would expect the life expectancy then to be good. It also depends on what other medical issues your father-in-law has and his expected life expectancy for those. I hope this helps.

It of course depends on what kind of surgery your father-in-law is having and his overall health, age and other relevant medical history. You really need to discuss this with his Doctor. Certainly the main risk is during the procedure and immediately afterwards.
