My mom’s dog has heart worms I know because of the cough. She has no money. What is the cheapest treatment available. My collie had hear tworms. I spent $300 and he still died after treatment.

There are no treatments available other than taking them to a Veterinarian who does the treatment and monitors the dog. Have had dogs that went through it and survived but were never the same. One of my dogs seemed to have gone through it ok only to collapse a few days later and passed away. Years ago the treatment was almost like the old adage..Burn down the barn to kill the rats…now it is much improved and a bit cheaper. Ask around for veterinarians that allow payments. I hope your dog gets better. If you put your dog thru this treatment be sure to put it on a heartworm preventive med.
A cough can also be caused by heart problems.
Have the vet check to see if it is heartworm and not something else.
As for heartworm, Ambertech has a product that most of the Yahoo groups are raving about ” rel=”nofollow”>.
If the heartworm is not too bad, then a dog can be put on Heartgard. It will not kill the worm, but will weaken it. In about 2 years the dog would be heartworm free.
The is another theory that givens the dog double the Heartgard dosage. Someone in my rescue is testing this now. She is treating 2 dogs with Heartgard double dose. She has been doing this for months and will be taking the dogs in for tests soon to see if they are now heart worm free.
Take him/her to the vet asap, in some cases heartguard will treat the worms if they are not in an advanced stage. Call your moms vet and ask what they recommend.
Heartgard is not a "treatment" it is a preventative. Has the dog been on ANY heartworm preventive at all?
A couch isn't always heartworm. Roundworms can cause an awful cough also.
Have a simple blood draw done to check for heartworm and a fecal float to check for roundworms.
Roundworms migrate and can end up in the lungs and trachea, therefore cause the dog to cough.
The heartworm treatment is best discussed with the vet. The roundworm treatment isn't all that expensive (weight of the dog to determine dosage).
Heartgard is only a preventative medication, and it is only available by prescription, so you need to see a vet to get it. If the dog does indeed have a heartworm infestation, the dog needs to be seen and evaluated by a vet immediately!!

Unfortunately the only way to get rid of heartworms is medication/a trip to the vet. Heart worms are very serious and if not treated, the dog may be beyond help in a matter of days. Call around. Vets vary in price. Where I live there are at least 30 vets within an hours drive. Take an hour and call them all. Explain your financial situation, and guaranteed one of them will give you a cheap price. When I called around for annual shots for my dog, the price varied $100. You can also try asking for a payment plan – post dated cheques. good luck
Heartgard,chewables,one per month,6 in a package for 26-50 lbs.
